Steve It looks like this on my setup _http://members.aol.com/martynshaw/pref.gif_ (http://members.aol.com/martynshaw/pref.gif) Whilst I'm with James on Themes (people seem to like to customise their SW with ridiculous colours) and the work he's doing, I'm not sure that images are necessary here - they might take up space that requires scrollers and for what? A spanner/cog (we know we're in the prefs bit already) and a 'Spectorgrams' icon for what? Maybe we could use it elsewhere as well? It's just that I'm not sure it's the best use of time - icons are hard to make and the main UI should be the focus of activities - get that right and then reuse them with a spanner (cog) attached for the prefs would be my choice, if we need them at all there. Just my humble opinion. Would you be > interested in providing them? Yeah, I can probably help with that. Something we're working on in the Tango project is reducing the number of icons used on the desktop. Icons can be a great help to a UI, but not if there are an overwhelming number. This also leads to unmaintainable themes. The Gnome Icon Theme, for example, is going through a transition to the Icon Naming Spec [1] that dramatically reduces the total number of unique icons to a more sane (but extensible, where appropriate) set. In light of this, I would encourage the Audacity developers to carefully consider how much icons will improve the interface in each given situation. That said, I don't know enough about this preferences situation to suggest whether or not icons are appropriate. As I'm not building Audacity from CVS, might someone be able to post a screenshot of the screens in question? That'd be a great help.
