I'm very sorry that I didn't use bugzilla to report this issue, but it wasn't willing to send me a password, so I'm (ab)using this developer mailing list. Currently, audacity files are recognized as being simple XML files in GNOME [1]. This is due to the fact that Audacity neither places a .desktop file in the applications directory, nor does it register a MIME type for ".aup" files. I'm attaching two files: A proposed .desktop file for audacity based on the Debian .desktop file but with "application/x-audacity-project" added to "MimeType". It is compliant to the desktop-entry-spec [2]. It should be installed to $PREFIX/share/applications and the Icon key should be changed to "audacity.xpm". Addionally, "audacity.xpm" should be installed to $PREFIX/share/pixmaps. The other one is an XML file compliant to the shared-mime-info spec [3] which registers the MIME type "application/x-audacity-project" so that modern desktop environments can detect .aup and correctly open files with audacity. It is meant to be installed to $PREFIX/share/mime/packages. If you need any help with integrating this, I can help you of course. We should just make the power of audacity available to those who don't know that it can be launched by entering "audacity" in a shell.
