Markus, I think the solution you've adopted - of making the mute/solo buttons disappear first when collapsing tracks, is the best solution for making the collapse/expand buttons work properly. It works a treat under Windows now. Of the options you suggest, I think the stereo tracks could start out smaller, i.e. the same total height as one mono track, and that would be neater, so that option gets my vote. More comments see below. I have a request, that an attempt to resize a collapsed track by dragging should succeed and automatically flip a collapsed track out of collapsed mode again. It's something I keep trying to do when I use the collapsed feature. --James. ----- Original Message ----- From: Markus Meyer <me...@me...> Opinionated comments follow :-) > - Leave everything as it is now (the "proven technology" argument) Possible. > - Leave mono tracks as big as they are now, but make stereo tracks > smaller by default Best choice, I think. > - Make everything smaller by default (with mono tracks, not all controls > would be visible with this solution) Nope. New users need to see all the controls from the start and will generally be working with few tracks, so the tracks can be large. > - Make track height dependent on window height and number of tracks, > that is, if there are only one or two tracks, show them "full-screen", > but later on proportionally resize tracks up to, say, 4 or 5 tracks Nope. But possibly a menu option to resize-to-fit. Or/and possibly an additional preferences that enables this automatic feature ( I would leave it disabled) if there is demand. > - Automatically minimize other tracks when new tracks don't fit on > screen anymore Nope. When there are more tracks than can fit collapsed without scrolling it doesn't help anymore. Better to be consistent however many tracks there are. > - Give track popup menu an option "Set current track height as default > height for new tracks" Nope. As far as possible global preferences should be settable from the preferences panel. |
