It's not common yet, but some projects will post forum emails to the mailing list and take mailing list emails and post them to the forums. In this compromise you can easily require subscription to the mailing lists and allow anonymous posting through the forum, combined with email notification to the poster in the forum (and the notification could include subscription links for the list itself). See, mailing lists are great, but I could see many users not even knowing where the lists are or how to open up a mail client because they use hotmail or somesuch. I don't know if this is a solution to the problems that started this thread, though. :) SO here's your grain of salt.
