Hi, if you plan to integrate some kind of crash reporting functionality into Audacity then this could be integraded without dependencies to external libs (on unixoid systems, not on win32 where you might depend on WinDbg from MS). At OpenOffice.org/StarOffice we had such a functionality. Maybe a short look at the impl. might be helpful, just if you're interested into it. AOO Grok link: http://openoffice-vm1-he-de.apache.org/xref/aoo419/main/crashrep/source/ The application implements an event handler to call the strace/pstack kernel function in case of a SEGV. Additionaly pmap is called to give additional information. If you want to have a readable call stack then you need to store the unstripped build with debug information to map the stack IDs to those from a build with debug information. Crash information was sent (opt-in at every crash of the application) via a soap interface to one server behind a firewall layer. Information is stored into a database. In this case it was possible to map the functional application areas / responsible developers to a stack via statistical db lookup on source code line level. At the end we defined thresholds on counts of similar call stacks to automatically submit a bugzilla bug. just my 2 EUR Cents.... Kind regards, Joost |

Hi, this weekend I've built the trunk build on my notebook (16 cores, 64 GB) on Ubuntu Focal and it just took some minutes to build it sucessfully. Is there a way to see the default GCC compiler options that are used to build Audacity ? Is -O2 used ? Kind regards, Joost |

I’ll take a look Peter. Sounds rather strange though. And yes, if you upgrade to any version newer than the previous one, older Audacity versions will not recognize it. From: Peter Sampson <pet...@gm...> Sent: Thursday, May 6, 2021 10:02 AM To: Devel <aud...@li...>; Peter Sampson <pet...@gm...> Subject: Re: [Audacity-devel] Updated FFmpeg support Ok so now when I test on W10 with Audacity 3.0.3 29a657b 1) I can no longer Import AAC or Opus files - I get an error message 2) I can't export Opus or AAC 2.1) Opus gives not one but two error messages 2.2) AAC export crashes Audacity Now I'm just a "simple-minded, dumb user" (for the purposes of this test) and of course I have only updated my app to 3.0.3 29a657b - and of course I haven't (yet) upgraded my FFmpeg library to. the latest spiffy version. BUT Audacity should NOT crash when trying to export AAC (step 2.1) An Error message about the wrong FFmpeg would be MUCH more helpful not just for the AAC but for the Opus export where the messages are over-techy for the average user and don't tell the#m what is going on. The failed import messages are not helpful either - telling the user to try importing Raw Data - when they should be told they've got the wrong FFmpeg. Since I won't be the only user who upgrades to 3.0.3 with the FFmpeg upgrade and who fails to also upgrade their FFMpeg library (I still don't know how to do that - where to get it from) I'm thinking the crash warrants a P1 bug to be logged on Bugzilla. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A related question for you Leland: If and when I do upgrade my FFmpeg so that 3.0.3 29a657b (and later work with FFmpeg), will that stop my earlier versions of Audacity stop working with FFmpeg ? Ok so now when I test on W10 with Audacity 3.0.3 29a657b 1) I can no longer Import AAC or Opus files - I get an error message 2) I can't export Opus or AAC 2.1) Opus gives not one but two error messages 2.2) AAC export crashes Audacity Now I'm just a *"simple-minded, dumb user"* (for the purposes of this test) and of course I have only updated my app to 3.0.3 29a657b - and of course I haven't (yet) upgraded my FFmpeg library to. the latest spiffy version. Hi Ian, Sorry this took so long, but I’ve just committed a fix to put the modules into “<prefix>/<libidr>/audacity/modules”. From: Ian McInerney <Ian...@ie...> Sent: Tuesday, April 20, 2021 7:19 AM To: aud...@li... Subject: [Audacity-devel] Why are modules in /usr/share? Looking at the compilation results of the Fedora build for audacity, I noticed that there is a library file being compiled into /usr/share/audacity//modules/mod-script-pipe.so - which is not good. /usr/share is meant to be architecture-independent files, and any architecture-specific code should be put into the /usr/lib* directories instead of the /usr/share directories - so a better place for it would be /usr/lib64/audacity/modules/mod-script-pipe.so (on 64-bit installs). Thanks, -Ian |

Hi Joost, my name is Dmitry, and I'm the developer from the Muse Group, working full time on Audacity. Re-platforming to Qt or any other toolkit is an idea for the long term. The fact that wxWidgets relies on the system libraries, such as GTK or Carbon is quite an issue for developing a consistent user experience across all the platforms supported. We will be absolutely open about our roadmap and we will take all the feedback from the community into account. There is an ongoing discussion about the next release and the future roadmap on our Discord server: https://discord.gg/z2emNJh9 Best, Dmitry On Wed, May 5, 2021 at 5:11 PM Joost Andrae <Joo...@gm...> wrote: > Hi, > > I still dont't have a real opinion about the buyout of the Audacity > brand to the Muse Group. Hi, I still dont't have a real opinion about the buyout of the Audacity brand to the Muse Group. It's interesting to see that the Muse Group is hiring a developer for Audacity development: https://mu.se/c-development-lead Interesting to read within this employment ad is: Familiarity with QT/QML I know the C++ class lib used currently might look somehow old fashioned but it is working cross platform and I could live with it as a user. QT could be a possible option (cross platform, license LGPL/MIT). But a change of such a framework should be discussed with the Audacity developer community. That's my opinion. And there are other cross platform GPLv2 compatible C++ class libs available. Just my 2 cents... Kind regards, Joost |
