That's great John! How did you hear from this user? (what channel?). I am always on the look out for users who get a problem repeatably. --James. Here is a favorable report from a user who reverted back to 2.4.2 because of his "Failed to open project database errors": "I upgraded to 3.0.2 RC from 2.4.2 and upon first launch got the dreaded "Automatic Crash Recovery" straight away. Heart sank a little bit. However I dismissed the warning (discarded the Project) and Crash Recovery not reappeared since. Audacity 3.0.2 RC appears to be behaving normally. Wow. I have closed/reopened the app numerous times. Opened FLACs, MP3s, WAVs etc. and it's looking good. Saved down a project, updated one etc. No error (yet). Seems like you guys are on the right track for a permanent fix so that's great [image: :)] nice work. Noted, I will not use the RC for anything super-important but will definitely keep it installed for the moment and let you know if any other errors or unusual behaviour occurs." I thought you might like to hear.... - John On Sun, Apr 11, 2021 at 11:03 AM Peter Sampson < pet...@gm...> wrote: > > > On Sun, Apr 11, 2021 at 1:19 PM James Crook <jam...@gm...> > wrote: > >> Audacity 3.0.2 Release Candidate 01 is now available for testing. >> This has important bug fixes in it which we want to get out to users. >> >> https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity-devel.html >> > > Testing on macOS 11.2.3 Big Sur > > All looking good so fa with the DMG installer: > 1) downloads OK > 2) Launches OK > 3) all effects present > 4) Manual present > 5) I hour stereo chirp exports at normal rate > > Peter > > >> >> >> --James. >> >> audacity-win-3.0.2rc01.exe (application/x-msdownload) - 29516688 bytes >> SHA-256 c6106f62dacd7a19cebfee5866069863702e1ec861c6c71684b249b39512b707 >> >> audacity-macos-3.0.2rc01.dmg (n/a) - 41545355 bytes >> SHA-256 fb37c4a53019c37fabb3e30332c28d27479e06da2707cd229a2b075e0fef6f05 >> >> audacity-minsrc-3.0.2rc01.tar.xz (n/a) - 13329932 bytes >> SHA-256 d318b78cf30960a5a867c6e3be8c6e0379746cfd76387ca2d0aa26de0393703c >> >> audacity-3.0.2rc01.zip (application/x-zip-compressed) - 12588154 bytes >> SHA-256 447ab1353d58f83c83a1628ef4d849e49299d84880f0d445e7fbb3d6f886a2b0 >> >> audacity-manual-3.0.2rc01.zip (application/x-zip-compressed) - 23238837 bytes >> SHA-256 2952f48fb2c5e24b65a897fca06fd3c9eb7851a4b04a3a9c72694e39a50ad24e >> >> _______________________________________________ >> audacity-devel mailing list >> aud...@li... >> https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/audacity-devel >> > _______________________________________________ > audacity-devel mailing list > aud...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/audacity-devel > |

This has important bug fixes in it which we want to get out to users. https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity-devel.html --James. audacity-win-3.0.2rc01.exe (application/x-msdownload) - 29516688 bytes SHA-256 c6106f62dacd7a19cebfee5866069863702e1ec861c6c71684b249b39512b707 audacity-macos-3.0.2rc01.dmg (n/a) - 41545355 bytes SHA-256 fb37c4a53019c37fabb3e30332c28d27479e06da2707cd229a2b075e0fef6f05 audacity-minsrc-3.0.2rc01.tar.xz (n/a) - 13329932 bytes SHA-256 d318b78cf30960a5a867c6e3be8c6e0379746cfd76387ca2d0aa26de0393703c audacity-3.0.2rc01.zip (application/x-zip-compressed) - 12588154 bytes SHA-256 447ab1353d58f83c83a1628ef4d849e49299d84880f0d445e7fbb3d6f886a2b0 audacity-manual-3.0.2rc01.zip (application/x-zip-compressed) - 23238837 bytes SHA-256 2952f48fb2c5e24b65a897fca06fd3c9eb7851a4b04a3a9c72694e39a50ad24e |

Yes, 3.0.1 is being skipped over. The fix/change of adding the pragma may only be a couple of lines of code, but it is a big difference in behaviour and requires complete retest of Audacity reading and writing database files (which is a big chunk of what Audacity does). I was anticipating 3.0.1 would be a release that gathers more information about the 2700 bug. Instead we are going straight to 2700 which fixes it. --James. I am slightly confused by the release numbering. An earlier thread mentioned 3.0.1 RC01 being released, but I don't recall ever seeing an announcement of a full 3.0.1 release after that and there doesn't seem to be a tag for it. Is 3.0.1 being skipped over? -Ian On Sat, Apr 10, 2021 at 4:27 PM James Crook <jam...@gm...> wrote: > Just a heads up that I currently plan to build RC01 for Audacity 3.0.2 > tomorrow. > > RC's are supposed to be genuine release candidates - builds that at the > time we make them we believe we may actually be releasing soon. I'm seeing a repeatable crash if a user inadvertently sets the macro export destination to a directory that is not writeable. (See comment 4: https://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2734) If this remains unfixed then I think bug 2734 becomes at least P2 because of the crash (which is also a regression). Just a heads up that I currently plan to build RC01 for Audacity 3.0.2 tomorrow. RC's are supposed to be genuine release candidates - builds that at the time we make them we believe we may actually be releasing soon. In 3.0.2 a few new rarely-seen strings are not translated and have not been sent to translators. That's understood and OK. They can be included properly in 3.0.3. If there is anything in current GitHub master (or anything missing!) that means tomorrow's build might not be a genuine release candidate, I need to know. Right at the moment the code and builds are looking good. I believe it's at least possible that we can go from RC01 through to release. The manual isn't quite locked yet to allow for recent updates, but will be locked by tonight. As usual, progress tracked at https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Next_Release --James. |

I'm looking at this code which is called when doing DiscardAllProjects(). It actually opens the project we are discarding, including creating a checkpointing thread. But do we actually need to do that? Shouldn't we just delete the file? I'm thinking particularly of when the file may actually be bogus or corrupt. --James. void ProjectFileManager::DiscardAutosave(const FilePath &filename) { InvisibleTemporaryProject tempProject; auto &project = tempProject.Project(); auto &projectFileManager = Get(project); // Read the project, discarding autosave projectFileManager.ReadProjectFile(filename, true); |

Honestly Paul, before going to be this morning I really didn’t have any ideas on what to look at. The solution (setting a busy timeout) that James came up with seems to be a good stopgap measure and should get into 3.0.1 (IMO). From: Paul Licameli <pau...@gm...> Sent: Thursday, April 8, 2021 6:58 AM To: aud...@li... Subject: Re: [Audacity-devel] Audacity 3.0.1 RC01 (for testing only) Jack, can you describe a precise sequence of reproducible steps? When you say “open” a file, tell us exactly what that means — dragging it onto an Audacity window or using a file dialog or something else, Leland, are you thinking as I am that this involves a short lived Audacity process that results only when you click an icon or use its context menu? I have got anecdotal word that the import problem can be on Mac too. It should be there. One of the last things that Audacity does when it exits is dump the log to that file. The only reason I can think of that it might not be doing that is that Audacity is not ending cleanly. James has come up with an idea on how to resolve the open error, but I’m still going to look into why it’s happening. It really shouldn’t be. But, whether I find the real cause or not, we’ll put in James’s solution. Maybe that is the key. Seems to be fairly easy to reproduce on FreeBSD and Windows but it doesn't seem to happen in any particular sequence but it always happens during an open file via ctrl+o type open from what I can tell. On Wed, Apr 7, 2021 at 3:10 PM Leland <ll...@ho... <mailto:ll...@ho...> > wrote: I was able to reproduce your error through some trickery: But, what’s interesting about this is that it’s not as simple as I first thought. If it had been a simple file locking issue, then we could have just increased the number of retries that sqlite performs until the operation succeeds. However, this is not a “plain” file locking issue. It’s a “database” locking issue where two processes/threads are trying to use the database concurrently. Almost as if two Audacity’s were running and fiddling with the same aup3. (I know that’s not the case.) I was able to reproduce the same message by holding an active “write” transaction using the “sqlite3” command line utility. If I use the same utility to hold a “read” transaction open, then the problem doesn’t happen. That suggests that something is writing to the database and, since we can probably assume it’s not some other application, it must be Audacity, maybe something in a different thread. Are you able to reproduce it Jack? Do you remember the exact steps? No biggie if you can’t since this is already a great help, but if you can, then I’d be interesting to see your “%APPDATA\audacity\lastlog.txt” file after you get the error and close Audacity. (the full log is saved at Audacity exit.) Again, thanks for letting us know. > -----Original Message----- > From: Jack L. <xxj...@gm... <mailto:xxj...@gm...> > > Sent: Wednesday, April 7, 2021 3:31 PM > To: Audacity-Devel list <aud...@li... <mailto:aud...@li...> > > Subject: Re: [Audacity-devel] Audacity 3.0.1 RC01 (for testing only) > > On windows 10, I just opened a mp3, then imported an mp3, then opened an > mp4 and "Error opening a new empty project". If I understand this sequence, Jack: There was no Audacity running, You right-clicked an .mp3 (not an .aup3) in Windows explorer and started Audacity that way, That worked as expected, Then you tried to import other files into that same Audacity session as other tracks, using Audacity not Windows explorer, That failed. Jack, can you describe a precise sequence of reproducible steps? When you say “open” a file, tell us exactly what that means — dragging it onto an Audacity window or using a file dialog or something else, Leland, are you thinking as I am that this involves a short lived Audacity process that results only when you click an icon or use its context menu? I have got anecdotal word that the import problem can be on Mac too. Thanks Jack. It’s pretty perplexing though. I don’t understand why the log entries are out of order. Are you using a “portable” version of Audacity or do you install? If portable, then you’ll find the lastlog.txt file inside your portable directory. If you install Audacity, then you should find it here: C:\Users\jlow\AppData\Roaming\Audacity From: Jack L. <xxj...@gm...> Sent: Wednesday, April 7, 2021 7:31 PM To: Audacity-Devel list <aud...@li...> Subject: Re: [Audacity-devel] Audacity 3.0.1 RC01 (for testing only) I might be looking in the wrong place C:\Users\jlow\AppData\Local\Audacity\SessionData\New Project 2021-04-07 13-28-44 N-4.aup3unsaved is the only thing i found in AppData On Wed, Apr 7, 2021 at 5:19 PM Leland <ll...@ho... <mailto:ll...@ho...> > wrote: Not finding the lastlog file is rather interesting by itself. Not finding the lastlog file is rather interesting by itself.
