I know this mailing list is kind of dead but it's the only way for me to 
inform you...

The webapp https://forum.audacityteam.org/ doesn't seem to be available 
in the moment.

I don't want to be connected to a Discord server as it doesn't allow me 
to read the content anonymously I just wanted to have a look at the 
forum page to get some news about Audacity.

[Audacity-devel] question about fading

Hi Audacity,

I love the program that you have and keep updating.

But i was wondering… i didn’t find this feature / option / macro yet.
I record from time to time some mix tapes and i was looking for a way to:

Fade the ends of my selection (the whole mixtape) in just one click / shortcut key
(fade in and out at the same time)
maybe add the option so you can adjust the length of the fade in / fade out by seconds?

Federico,

If you want a new project then open a new/2nd Audacity window. The way you did it was to keep all the undo info etc like you surmised. It was doing the expected things so no problem with the program. Opening a second window would have given you a fresh start on the new project.

May be I'm doing something wrong.

I have a two-track 2 min project. I saved it and not only it took 
several minutes but it createed a 6 Gb file.

Previously, I had loaded a 1.5 Gb wav file (2.5 hours long) and had been 
working for a while with it. The process I performed was to resample 
from 44.1 kHz to 22.05 Hz, convert from stereo to mono and export the 
audio to flac. Then I deleted the track and started with a completely 
new, single empty track, without closing the earlier project.

While working, the original file name kept showing at the top bar. When 
I was done with the second project, I "saved as" it to a new name and 
directory, and I got the 6 Gb file.

The expected behavior would have been to save into the new project the 
current status of the audio, i.e., a two-track, two-minute signal... 
unless all the garbage and undo history is also saved to the project...

But what is more perplexing is that then I tried to save it again 
without changing the original name (which by the way never changed, as 
it happens with other programs when one saves a file with a different 
name) and then bingo! I got a much more reasonable 22 Mb file.

Then I exited Audacity and the 6 Gb shrinked down to 22 Mb! Pity that I 
didn't copy it prior to exiting!

Hello Helios.

Bitwig is a company which produces a proprietary DAW called Bitwig Studio
and the full source code for BitWig Studio is not on Github.  I can see how
you might think it was, especially if you are not a developer yourself.
 The existence of a company named X having some repositories on Github
which are public does not mean that their main commercial products are
actually fully open to you to view, somehow.  No they are not.

And yet, even if they were, the Audacity team is bound by international
copyright law not to introduce any code into Audacity that is not open
source licensed. Even if someone were to send someone a zip of the source
code of something closed source and commercial, we would not look at it, as
that would potentially open us up to liability.

What is open source that bitwig provides are the following 16 public
visible repositories containing little toys, accessories, or side projects:

The one audacity developers and users would be most interested in I think
is that Bitwig is trying to promote a cross-DAW standard for project
interoperability.

If this standard was to be used in Audacity, or other open source projects
(like Ardour) then you could export a project with stems and probably have
it open up with all the audio lined up as desired, in any supported DAW.
This would be a big step up from the current status quo which is the manual
exporting and importing and alignment of stems (if the stem audio doesn't
all have silent padding in the front to make lining it all up easier).

Hope this helps you understand that Bitwig's full source code isn't visible
to the public.   You might also stumble on Microsoft's github profile, or
think that Microsoft, who owns github has decided to publish all the source
code to Microsoft Office or Windows 11, but that also has not happened, and
won't happen.

useful to increase functionality of Audacity's Interface and Functions.
Particularly real-time effects, slip edition (not just shuffle),
interesting time stretching/pitch shifting algorithms, midi sequencing,
external control support, etc. Particularly, I am an extensive Audacity
user, nevertheless, Bitwig Studio interface and workflow seem really
appealing to me. The only problem is that its license is proprietary, while
Audacity's is Open. Please, take some time to check which functionality
might be interesting (and viable) to introduce to Audacity for it to be
enhanced as a DAW. Thanks in advance.

That looks interesting, but it also looks like early days for CLAP (no
commits between Oct 2016 and April 2021). The Audacity developers are
currently working on VST3 support.

issues (https://github.com/audacity/audacity/issues)

Developers from u-he and Bitwig are working on this as an alternative 
for VST. Maybe it would be interesting for Audacity developers to have a

This can be  done fairly easily with a "Nyquist plug-in" (see:
https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/nyquist.html).

Getting started with Nyquist is a fairly steep learning curve, but we have
a forum board for Nyquist where we can give you a lot of help. If you post

My idea for a plug-in is very simple, however I have 0 coding abilities of
any sort.  So I am not aware of how easy or difficult this would be to
create.  I believe it would fall under the audio analyzing section of
plug-ins,  could be wrong.
I will try to explain in simplest terms, let me know if more details are
needed.

My goal in sending this is to obtain advice, and to find out what people
think, maybe its a waste of time, maybe this already exists, or there is a
better way.   If not, do you think it would be useful for others?   I would
use it.

And i can go in and listen to those individually.    The label can be for
just he beginning of it... and make a separate label for every 30 seconds

They will likely want to know whether you are using Pulseaudio or not,
and whether Audacity is the Ubuntu package or one you have built
yourself.

[Audacity-devel] Strange behavior with Scarlet Solo USB i/o

I have a studio system consisting of an old, amazingly reliable HP
8740W laptop with a Scarlett Solo USB mixer attached.  It's running
Xubuntu 20.04.3 LTS with Audacity version 2.3.3 (which, strangely
enough, I cannot get through an SSH connection because audacity
insists on connecting to the display even when run from the command
line for version info only - separate issue).

The laptop has separate headphone and mic jacks, built-in mic and
speajers, and works fine with a logitech USB headset (mic and
headphones).  It also has an HDMI monitor connected to the Display
Port via an adapter, and Audacity gives me a dizzying array of
multiple mic and speaker options - way more mics than speakers.

For quite a while now I had been unable to get either the mixer's mic
or the mixer's headset to work from within Audacity.

Tonight the mic started working beautifully, but the headphones get no

selecting Track Panel or Tracks, the srceen capture frame window is also 
captured, and it shouldn't.

The problem seems so overwhelming to a newbie like me, that to explain it
feels beyond me. So I made a screencast video showing the problem. Since it
