According to the manual of Super Cobra on the Atari 8-bit, the control is the same as you say on the 2600: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-super-cobra_5157.html --- Press the FIRE button to fire your missiles and drop bombs. Each press of the FIRE button alternately fires either one missile or drops one bomb. --- So unless there is an hacked version of Super Cobra for the Atari 8-bit, it only uses one joystick button. The Atari 7800 had joypads with two buttons. Both buttons were connected to the same joystick button input but each button was also connected to one of the paddle inputs so the paddle inputs could be used to see which of the two buttons were pressed. Both buttons acted the same on games that only supports one button (e.g. 2600 games on 7800 console but also when connected to an Atari 2600 or Atari 8-bit). But I suspect the Atari 8-bit can also use the paddle inputs to see which one of the 7800 joypad buttons is pressed but I never tried it. I remember playing the game with emulator that had two fire buttons but don't remember which, that was some time ago when i was using Windows. I guess i will look for another emulator, probably Mame, and see if there is Super Cobra rom for Mame. Please disassemble the game (or read its manual) to figure out what user input is used for the second trigger. I suspect either second joystick or a key on keyboard. That is, when using an unmodified Sega Genesis game pad on an unmodified Atari 8-bit. I was able to detect when the C fire button was pressed using a PADDLE input, if I recall correctly. (B fire on the game pad was standard STRIG. The A button and Start are undetectable.) IIRC, I believe there's a way to read Atari 7800 controllers on the Atari 8-bit as well, but they behave differently. (On them, _both_ the left and right fire buttons come back as STRIG, and for games that care to distinguish, you need to read another value. I admit I've never really toyed with them, though I should. I've got a very nice EdLaddin dual-stick arcade-style joystick for my 7800. It therefore has four firebuttons; two per player.) -- -bill! There are a few unofficial standards for a second fire button, e.g. Joy2B. It is typically a button connected to a paddle input. The second button then reads as maximum or minimum resistance at the typical paddle inputs. Some homebrew Atari software uses that, or there are games modified for a second fire button where useful Or is it that multiple keys or gamepad buttons would be registered as Fire? I recently received a request to implement a 16KB Williams cartridge type in Altirra and would like to know if there is interest from Atari800 in coordinating a new CAR type code for it. It's a small modification of cartridge types that are already emulated. The new cartridge type would be the same as the existing 64KB Williams cartridge (type 8) and 32KB Williams cartridge (type 22), except that the image size would be 16 KB and bank addressing would be reduced to only one bit used, vs. 2 bits for 32KB and 3 bits for 64KB. Based on the existing list, the new 16KB Williams cartridge would be CAR type 76. |

I use a ps3 controller and it atari800 uses the analog stick. I am able to use xboxdrv to override the kernel driver and disable the analog nub so i can use the dpad(run as root or use sudo): xboxdrv --detach-kernel-driver -D -s --dpad-only Also, sometimes I use AntiMicroX to remap keyboard/joystick inputs. Not sure if either of these things will help in your situation. Good luck! I've been using an X-Box controller, and I'm pleased that it just works, with most of the buttons acting as the fire button, and the left joystick working as the joystick. I would really like to be able to reconfigure it to be more useful, for example, mapping the other joystick to also work, mapping buttons for start, select, and option, and one as the space bar for Defender. (I still think Atari should have developed a two-button joystick, using one of the paddle inputs.) I'm using the Linux SDL version if that matters. Is this something I can do in emulator or is there some wrapper for the controller that I should use, causing it to send keyboard codes? (Would this be a good feature for the emulator?) |

I often start the emulator with two disk images: The game in question, plus a blank disk I can use if I want to use it to save to. (I have a wrapper script that does this automatically, tossing the save images if they aren't modified.) This works great most of the time, but I found that if the first image is an ATX image, and the second is an ATR image, the emulator drops the ATX image and boots with just the ATR image. It should boot the ATX image with the ATR image loaded as D2:. I would hit this same bug with a two-disk game if only the first were ATX. (Now if only all multi-disk games would actually use multiple drives.) |

This may be a bit off-topic, but over they years, I've written a number of programs related Atari 8-bits, mostly to manage disk images and files from Linux, which is very useful if you're running an emulator. I've now put them up on GitHub: https://github.com/pcrow/atari_8bit_utils Over the last few days, I've written a new BASIC analyzer. I know there are programs for this on the Atari, but this runs on Linux, which can be more convenient with emulators. It will let you correct common problems with save files and even show the code listing. Probably the trickiest part was writing code to display Atari floating point numbers; I'm sure that's a very sub-optimal bit of code. It was a lot of fun writing it. It will detect if there are any non-standard opcodes or operands, as there were several expanded BASIC implementations, but I don't know how to determine which one was used, and I don't think I have any code that was written for them. (I got started simply by writing a program to determine if a file was BASIC so that I could enable/disable BASIC automatically when starting the emulator based on whether any files on the disk image used it.) If anyone finds these useful and wants new features, it would be fun to play around with them some more. |
