Hi All, Sorry I really am a noob. I hope this is not too dumb. I really want to install Joe's Own Editor into Astlinux http://joe-editor.sourceforge.net/ Having already setup a sucessfull Astlinux installation on my VIA Mini ITX system I would really love to add Joe to the installation. Is it possible? Can anyone help get me started? Cheers Enaran |

I would strongly suggest copying the rc.conf file from /stat/etc/ and using that as a template instead of reusing an older one. There were several variable changes and additions. Nedi, perhaps the ntp server you selected (ntpserv.hs-magdeburg.de) is restricted in some way. The pool.ntp.org time servers do have some regional servers. I'd suggest going to their website ( http://www.pool.ntp.org )and using one of those servers. http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/europe Darrick -- Darrick Hartman DJH Solutions, LLC http://www.djhsolutions.com |

I routinely test and build the dev environment (trunk only) on CentOS 4.4, Ubuntu Feisty and Ubuntu Dapper. Using multiple distros and hardware combinations has exposed several bugs that I wouldn't have found otherwise. I encourage users to use their favorite distro and report on any problems they have. I have also added a dependency checker that will check your host system and make sure you have everything installed. It's a work in progress, but it tests for almost everything used in trunk. -- Kristian Kielhofner |

From what it looks like now, it should be possible to get the current image into 32mb (with bootloader), although I can't recommend it because it won't leave you much room for upgrading... There didn't seem to be much demand to keep AstLinux under 32mb... If there is, perhaps I can start to make a "micro" version (for lack of a better name) that would always fit in the original 32mb. -- Kristian Kielhofner ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. Trunk has not been updated to php5 (yet). Since the next php5 release is in RC2 status, I'd imagine Kristian is going to wait until that is released before updating trunk. The reason we went with a pre-release version of php5 rather than stay with old php4 in the 0.4 branch is two-fold. First, there were significant security risks with the version of php that was included. Older versions of php (including the released php-5.2.1) did not cross-compile without additional patching. We decided that our time and effort were better spent elsewhere and that if we can remove the patches, it makes maintaining alot easier. Unless you want to be on the bleeding edge, I would recommend grabbing the 0.4 branch from SVN rather than trunk. I would guess that in the next month or so trunk will stabilize enough that it would be ready for more people to try. At this point, you're better off starting with something that is changing less than trunk. Darrick -- Darrick Hartman DJH Solutions, LLC http://www.djhsolutions.com |

The image size did increase to slightly under 61MB. We added several useful utilities. We felt it was better to increase the size of the image and include these new tools rather than keep the size down. It's still quite small and you can always download the development environment and build your own smaller image with several things stripped out. Thanks Darrick, I now have eth0 working and an IP address assigned by the router:-) I changed rc.modules to load the b44 NIC driver. Next step is pppoe. I set up my connection info in rc.conf but nothing appears to happen. How do I start an ADSL connection manually? When I use the pppoe command is just sits there, needs Ctrl+D to break. I normally use pppoeconf to setup and pon dsl-provider. How does it work in astlinux? The archives only gave me an old discussion when rp-pppoe was being first integrated, no usage examples though. Lower priority question, how do I change my keyboard mapping from US? Thanks, Marcus |

Marcus- That's going to depend on what you turn on. For a base astlinux install, 'out of the box', so to speak, there's the system root password, and the https administrator password. Both are changeable through the web interface. If you configure Asterisk to allow manager API connections, you should pay attention there too (by default, I believe it is either off or at least without any accounts configured- I confess, I don't have a stock install lying at my fingertips at the moment). In general, I tend to put any Asterisk (not just astlinux) machines inside some sort of firewall, and only open the ports that I need to get connections as I need them. IAX is fairly firewall-friendly, so I try to stick there- but there are ways of getting SIP to work through most firewalls as well. This limits exposure to that unknown bug that'll be released tomorrow. And of course, try to run the latest possible Asterisk itself- there have been a few security holes found there, but the biggies have been patched and included in astlinux. -Paul On 4/27/07, Marcus <li...@wo...> wrote: > > Which passwords do I need to change to secure my astlinux box once it's > on the net? > > I know the default login needs changing of course, but what other > services might need changing? Which passwords do I need to change to secure my astlinux box once it's on the net? I know the default login needs changing of course, but what other services might need changing? I'm completely new to astlinux, so I don't want to get hacked within minutes of going online ;-) Are all the services configured in rc.conf or are there exceptions? Thanks, Marcus |
