Free alternative for Office productivity tools: Apache OpenOffice - formerly known as OpenOffice.org - is an open-source office productivity software suite containing word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, formula editor, and database management applications. OpenOffice is available in many languages, works on all common computers, stores data in ODF - the international open standard format - and is able to read and write files in other formats, included the format used by the most common office suite packages. OpenOffice is also able to export files in PDF format. OpenOffice has supported extensions, in a similar manner to Mozilla Firefox, making easy to add new functionality to an existing OpenOffice installation.

User Reviews

  • I have used this for years to write grant proposals, reviews, articles for publication in lay and scientific journals, a long multi-chapter book that contained many mathematical formulas and illustrations, handout materials and "slideshow pdfs" for in-person and virtual courses and workshops, personal and professional correspondence etc.. One thing that OpenOffice does very nicely is dealing with encapsulated PostScript (eps and epsi) files. Importing and exporting MS Office-compatible files isn't perfect, but a big part of that problem may be that most MS Office users don't really understand how to use formatting tools e.g. styles in particular. FWIW, LibreOffice has its own problems importing and exporting MS Office compatible files, and basically lost the ability to handle eps and epsi files many versions ago.
  • I think both Libreoffice and OpenOffice must merge together in one office suit. This fork thing is not benefiting the community.

And why exactly is that a reason to give the original project a two point review? ;-)

  • Open Office 4.1.15 download Able to download the file and extract it but the file won't update the 4.1.14 version. Can some one assist? I've done many updates before and have never had this issue.
