The ProtonVPN Windows app project hosts the official open-source client software that lets users securely connect their Windows machines to the ProtonVPN service with full system-wide VPN protection. This app starts the tor service, and then modifies your proxy settings to route most of your apps through the tunnel made by tor. When you see the page saying you're connected, All your internet data passing through the tunnel is encrypted.
