libjpeg-turbo is a JPEG image codec that uses SIMD instructions (MMX, SSE2, NEON, AltiVec) to accelerate baseline JPEG compression and decompression on x86, x86-64, ARM, and PowerPC systems. On such systems, libjpeg-turbo is generally 2-6x as fast as libjpeg, all else being equal. On other types of systems, libjpeg-turbo can still outperform libjpeg by a significant amount, by virtue of its highly-optimized Huffman coding routines. In many cases, the performance of libjpeg-turbo rivals that of proprietary high-speed JPEG codecs. libjpeg-turbo implements both the traditional libjpeg API as well as the less powerful but more straightforward TurboJPEG API. libjpeg-turbo also features colorspace extensions that allow it to compress from/decompress to 32-bit and big-endian pixel buffers (RGBX, XBGR, etc.), as well as a full-featured Java interface.

The goal of the project is now to develop a user library called libpfm4 to help setup performance events for use with the perf_events Linux kernel interface. The development of the perfmon kernel subsystem, libpfm and pfmon has now stopped.

PICSimLab is a realtime emulator of development boards with MPLABX/avr-gdb debugger integration. PICSimLab supports microcontrollers from picsim, simavr, uCsim, qemu-stm32, qemu-esp32, and gpsim. PICSimLab has integration with MPLABX/Arduino IDE for programming the microcontroller's boards. As the purpose of PICSimLab is to emulate real hardware it does not have any source code editing support. For code editing and debugging the same tools used for a real board should be used with PICSimLab, such as MPLABX, Arduino IDE, or VSCode with PlatformIO. PICSimLab supports several devices (spare parts) that can be connected to the boards for simulation. Such as example LEDs and push buttons for simple outputs and inputs and some more complex ones like the ethernet shield w5500 for internet connection or the color graphic display ili9340 with touchscreen. mcrypt, and the accompanying libmcrypt, are intended to be replacements for the old Unix crypt, except that they are under the GPL and support an ever-wider range of algorithms and modes.

Spleen started as a personal challenge. Patrick Wildt (patrick@) recently imported ssdfb(4), a driver for small OLED displays in OpenBSD and needed a 5x8 font to be able to squeeze more columns and rows on those devices. As someone spending most of his time in a terminal, I have been thinking about drawing my own font for a while, and this was the perfect opportunity. To be able to test character spacing and alignment, I started to use the font in xterm, then a zoomed version, and one thing leading to another, I started creating a 8x16 version, and then bigger versions based on it. Spleen is now available in 5 sizes: 5x8, 8x16, 12x24, 16x32, and 32x64. Fonts are provided in the Glyph Bitmap Distribution Format (BDF), and in the .dfont format for Macintosh users. All sizes contain all ISO/IEC 8859-1 characters, except for the 5x8 version which only contains printable ASCII characters.

GNU Prolog is a free implementation (under GPL) of the logic programming language PROLOG. It can compile to native machine code which is extremely fast in execution. Another feature is the included constraint solver.

Microsoft BASIC for 6502 is the original assembly-language source code for Microsoft’s BASIC interpreter version 1.1, written for the MOS Technology 6502 8-bit microprocessor back in the late 1970s. It was used on pioneering personal computers (such as the Apple II, Commodore PET, etc.), enabling users to write and run programs in BASIC on those systems. gVisor is an application kernel developed by Google that provides a strong layer of isolation between applications and the host operating system. Written in Go, it implements a Linux-compatible system call interface that runs entirely in user space, creating a secure sandboxed environment for containers. Unlike traditional virtual machines or lightweight syscall filters, gVisor follows a third approach that offers many of the security benefits of virtualization while maintaining the speed, resource efficiency, and flexibility of containers. Its key runtime, runsc, integrates seamlessly with container ecosystems such as Docker and Kubernetes, making it easy to deploy sandboxed workloads using familiar tools. By intercepting and safely handling syscalls from applications, gVisor reduces the attack surface of the host kernel, mitigating risks associated with running untrusted or potentially malicious code in containerized environments.

This project provides a step-by-step educational guide on building a simple operating system kernel entirely from scratch, specifically targeting the Raspberry Pi 3. The operating system, referred to as RPi OS, is inspired by the Linux kernel but remains intentionally minimal to focus on clarity and teaching fundamental OS concepts. Each lesson introduces a kernel feature and demonstrates its implementation within RPi OS, followed by a comparison to how the same concept is realized in the Linux kernel.
