MINIMON is a Machine Language Monitor for the Commodore VIC-20. It is a combined hardware/software project: a cartridge for the computer's expansion port (with a cartridge extender for a secondary cartridge), plus firmware, which is the actual MINIMON monitor. MINIMON features all commands usually expected from a debugger/monitor: Memory dump and edit, Register dump and edit, Execute code from monitor, Direct Assembler and Disassembler (all documented opcodes of the NMOS 6502), Transfer/Compare/Fill/Hunt in memory blocks, Use of breakpoints with the BRK instruction, Load/Save/Verify with any storage device. PrivateICE is a kernel level debugger similar to SoftICE on Windows. Planned is also a GUI interface for normal debugging in a multitasking environment, as opposed to SoftICE which always halts the entire machine when active.

This project born a few years ago when I encountered a fatal bug on a production environment, unfortunately not replicable on my development machine. I spent many time finding a solution, using also freeware and commercial third-party tools and libraries, but none helped me because the bug crashed the process, and no of the above tools could be able to catch the exception before the process dying. Also, it was not possible to install a development environment onto the production machines, so the only solution was to develop a debugger which didn't need any user/developer interaction. I used many open source resources, then I decided to make the Bug Finder an open source project. It is built over a pluggable architecture to support other languages different from Borland Delphi (the one I used to develop my faulting application and the Bug Finder too). A macro library for the AVR microcontroller (www.atmel.com).

While I may have started with Linux 0.11, I've expanded this to include several older relases of the Linux kernel that you can cross compile from Windows, and run on Qemu. I've managed to get the older versions of the software tools running on Windows, so that there is no major invasive source changes, outside of either broken drivers, or massaging the makefiles to find things in the new paths, and calling the appropriate tools where needed. Linux 0.10 is the first oldest version of Linux that is somewhat usable. While it lacks things like TCP/IP, and robust filesystems, it does offer a small kernel size, perfect for playing around with. You can comfortably make changes on Windows, re-compile and test all from a 'normal' desktop.
