TuxGuitar is a multitrack guitar tablature editor and player written in Java-SWT, It can open GuitarPro, PowerTab and TablEdit files.

Impro-Visor® is a music notation tool for producing monophonic lead sheets, specifically intended to help the improviser. Chord symbols are used to generate backing tracks automatically. Improvisation advice exists in the form of note coloration, database of licks, and automatic lick generation from grammars. Grammars can be learned automatically from transcriptions. Styles can be edited and created by the user. Other features include generation of roadmaps for understanding keys and idiomatic chord progressions, chord voicing keyboard, MIDI and MusicXML export. BeatBox is a Java application in which users use a 16x16 grid of checkboxes to create a beat with various percussion instruments. Beats can be saved and loaded easily. The entire application is as intuitive and user-friendly as possible.

This project was started as a Masters project back in 2006. I completed the project as part of my dissertation, and produced software to render Maya script (MEL) to animate a piano model I'd also created. From this I produced a number of videos, which I uploaded periodically to YouTube. Following numerous request I attempted to create a standalone application to playback MIDI performances without the need for a 3rd party 3d modelling/rendering application such as Maya. Given my original background in Java, and it's existing support for MIDI files, I proceeded to attempt to create this using Java 3D. However, (and this sounds like an excuse, which it probably is), life got in the way and I never completed the project to a commercial standard for reproduction. As such, I'm offering the source here in good will to other developers/musicians who might be able to take what I've achieved and carry it forward to a useful learning tool.

RasmusDSP is an embeddable Audio/MIDI processor. It contains various filters and generators (including SoundFont 2.0 compatible synthesizer). Has a script interpreter which is used to describe instruments, route Audio/MIDI signal between processor units.

MIDI Rules is a Rule-Based MIDI Processing Environment that can process (translate, map, convert, filter, trigger, route) MIDI messages. It supports multiple MIDI inputs/outputs, variables (enables state-based processing) and timed/delayed messages.

The MidiRandomizer is a Java Swing application that generates MIDI files (SMF) according to a set of randomization parameters. This allows some measure of control over the random patterns produced.

This software can be used to search scales & chords from a large and expandable database (XML). Thanks to the jmusic project (https://jmusic.sourceforge.io), this is also possible to generate music starting from these scales & chords and export the result to MIDI file.
