    PX4 Autopilot

    PX4 Autopilot

    PX4 Autopilot Software

PX4 is used in a wide range of use-cases, from consumer drones to industrial applications. It is also the leading research platform for drones and has been successfully applied to underwater vehicles and boats. PX4 provides a standard to deliver drone hardware support and software stack, allowing an ecosystem to build and maintain hardware and software in a scalable way. Drone development is complicated, and how to get started can be daunting and hard to navigate. These tutorials and resources provide a walkthrough of the basics of PX4. PX4 is highly portable, OS-independent and supports Linux, NuttX and MacOS out of the box. The PX4 User Guide explains how to assemble supported vehicles and fly drones with PX4. GAAS

    GAAS

Autonomous aviation intelligence software for drones and VTOL

GAAS (Generalized Autonomy Aviation System) is an open source software platform for autonomous drones and VTOLs. GAAS was built to provide a common infrastructure for computer-vision based drone intelligence. In the long term, GAAS aims to accelerate the coming of autonomous VTOLs. Being a BSD-licensed product, GAAS makes it easy for enterprises, researches, and drone enthusiasts to modify the code to suit specific use cases. Our long-term vision is to implement GAAS in autonomous passenger carrying VTOLs (or "flying cars"). The first step of this vision is to make Unmanned Aerial Vehicles truly "unmanned", and thus make drones ubiquitous. We currently support manned and unmanned multi-rotor drones and helicopters. Our next step is to support VTOLs and eVTOLs.

    KIPRCopter

A Quadrotor Aerial Robot platform for K-12 Education.

The AR Drone is a quadrotor helicopter sold by Parrot. Parrot sells the drone as a toy controlled via a wireless device such as Ipods, Ipads, or Android based devices. Parrot advertises the toy as an advance in gaming because the control devices will project a virtual reality allowing users to play with their physical drone with an enhanced version on their controller where bullets or hot air balloons must be avoided in the virtual world. KIPR, KISS Institute for Practical Robotics is an organization that facilitates the learning of robotics programming in middle and high school students to peak an interest in computer science. To do this they hold competitions around the world called botball where students program autonomous land robots to perform various sets of tasks. KIPR, now wants to expand and leave the ground by integrating flying robots (the AR Drone) into the tasks for added interest, fun, and challenge for students.

    CarlaAir

    CarlaAir

Fly Drones Inside a CARLA World

CarlaAir is an open-source robotics simulator that combines CARLA urban driving with multirotor drone flight inside one Unreal Engine environment. It is designed for research involving coordinated aerial and ground autonomous systems. Vehicles, pedestrians, drones, weather, and sensor streams can coexist within the same simulated world. Users can access both CARLA and AirSim-style Python APIs to control different agents and environments. The platform supports synchronized cameras, lidar, navigation sensors, trajectory recording, and joint air-ground scenarios. ROS 2 examples connect simulated vehicles and drones to external robotics workflows and RViz. Prebuilt packages for Linux and Windows reduce setup effort for researchers studying embodied intelligence and autonomous systems.

    Drone WayPointer

    Drone WayPointer

A ROS package to remotely control the Parrot AR Drone 2.0

"Drone WayPointer" is a ROS package that provides a UI to allow for remote control of the Parrot AR Drone 2.0. It is developed in C++ with qt-ros and the Qt4 Development FrameWork. It is designed to work with the ROS - Fuerte and it uses the the ardrone_autonomy driver (Fuerte-devel Branch). It has so far only been tested on the tum_simulator and not on the actual drone. The main functionalities it provides is camera streams of front or bottom cameras of the drone, button and slider control of the drone XYZ velocities, control using waypoints and waypoint commands, pose estimation using simple dead-reckoning and measurement and image recording functionalities.

    FASTER

    FASTER

3D Trajectory Planner in Unknown Environments

FASTER is a research-grade 3D trajectory planner for autonomous navigation in unknown environments. It was developed for both aerial robots and ground vehicles that must move safely while new obstacles are discovered. The planner continuously builds safe and unknown-space trajectory segments rather than assuming the environment is fully mapped. Optimization is used to generate dynamically feasible paths while maintaining safety constraints. The project integrates with ROS, Gazebo, MAVROS, mapping components, and the Gurobi optimizer. Simulation examples demonstrate navigation for UAVs and ground robots in cluttered spaces. FASTER was published in IEEE Transactions on Robotics and is primarily intended for robotics research rather than turnkey consumer navigation.

    Flix

    Flix

Making an ESP32-based quadcopter from scratch

Flix is an open-source ESP32-based quadcopter project built from general-purpose components for education, research, and experimentation. Its firmware is written in Arduino-style C++ and intentionally kept compact so learners can understand the complete flight-control stack. Communication uses MAVLink over Wi-Fi or ESP-NOW. The drone can be controlled with a USB gamepad, radio controller, or smartphone. A wireless command-line interface supports configuration and analysis without a wired connection. The project also includes a Gazebo simulator that runs the original flight code and a Python library for scripted or automatic flights. Hardware files, assembly instructions, troubleshooting guides, and flight-control documentation make it suitable for hands-on learning.

    GAAS

    GAAS

GAAS is an open-source program designed for fully autonomous VTOL

GAAS, or Generalized Autonomy Aviation System, is an open-source autonomy framework for drones, VTOL aircraft, and experimental flying-car research. It focuses on robust autonomous navigation using lidar rather than relying primarily on vision. The system includes mapping, HD-map localization, path planning, obstacle handling, and aircraft-control modules. Localization components include NDT and ICP approaches, with GPU acceleration available for selected algorithms. Simulation support integrates lidar, stereo cameras, PX4, Gazebo, and AirSim environments. Its modular C++ architecture allows individual autonomy components to be replaced or extended. The repository targets research rather than production aviation and reflects an older robotics stack centered on Ubuntu 18.04 and ROS Melodic.

    dRehmFlight

    dRehmFlight

Teensy/Arduino flight controller & stabilization for small-scale VTOL

dRehmFlight is an Arduino-compatible flight controller created for hobbyists, researchers, and learners building unusual VTOL aircraft. It emphasizes readable, centralized code instead of a large framework spread across many files and classes. The project is designed to teach aircraft stabilization and flight-control concepts while remaining easy to modify. Its primary hardware platform uses a Teensy 4.0 microcontroller and an MPU6050 six-axis IMU. Features include receiver input handling, IMU calibration, ESC calibration, motor arming, and customizable control logic. Because the code is easy to edit in the Arduino ecosystem, experimental aircraft behaviors can be added quickly. The project is intended mainly for education and rapid prototyping rather than commercial flight-control deployment.
