    fping

    fping

    High performance ping tool

fping is a program to send ICMP echo probes to network hosts, similar to ping, but much better performing when pinging multiple hosts. fping has a very long history: Roland Schemers did publish a first version of it in 1992 and it has established itself since then as a standard tool for network diagnostics and statistics. There was no official fping release from 2002 until end of 2011. Various patches existed, but were never integrated "upstream".

The VPCS can simulate up to 9 PCs. You can ping/traceroute them, or ping/traceroute the other hosts/routers from the virtual PCs when you study the Cisco routers in the Dynamips. VPCS is not the traditional PC, it is just a program running on the Linux or Windows, and only few network commands can be used in it. But VPCS can give you a big hand when you study the Cisco devices in the Dynamips.

This program is similar to ping, but tests connectivity at the link layer (layer 2) instead of the network layer (layer 3). This works like the HP-UX linkloop utility. It was tested between Linux and HP-UX. There is also a "server-side" utility.
