On this day in 1983 Microsoft Corp. introduced the first two-button mouse for IBM and IBM-compatible PCs. The mouse used a three-byte protocol with the two buttons, and could be purchased by itself or bundled with the latest Microsoft Word processor at the time. Microsoft manufactured 100,000 units of this model but only sold 5,000 before finding success in a more popular, much-improved version in 1985.
