Worms Special Edition

Worms Special Edition, from Team17 Software Ltd., is an action game released under a full license.

Worms 3D

Worms 3D adapts the turn-based artillery gameplay of the series into fully three-dimensional arenas: you command teams of cartoonish worms, each with health and a selection of weapons and tools, taking turns to move, aim and attack until one side is wiped out. The arsenal includes fast, low-damage guns, grenades, heavy rockets and tactical equipment like parachutes; a structured single-player campaign of missions introduces varied objectives beyond standard matches. The game shines in chaotic same-screen local multiplayer, offering fun competitive or cooperative sessions, but it lacks online multiplayer, which reduces replayability for players who prefer persistent internet competition. It’s well suited to those who enjoy physics-based, strategic artillery action and social local play, while players seeking long-term online or extensive solo content may prefer newer entries.

Worms Reloaded

Worms Reloaded revives the series’ turn-based strategy gameplay with updated presentation and familiar mechanics. Matches offer single-player and multiplayer options across richly destructible landscapes, with a wide, quirky arsenal and tactical tools that reward positioning and creative attacks; timed turns combined with unpredictable physics create tense, humorous encounters that emphasize strategic planning. The game adds sharper visuals and extensive customization for teams and weapons, letting players personalize the experience. Its blend of light-hearted humor and genuine tactical depth makes it accessible to newcomers while providing replayability and challenge for long-time fans.

Worms W.M.D

A modern, nostalgia-leaning take on classic turn-based artillery action, this entry preserves the series’ core loop—commanding a small squad of cartoon worms to eliminate opposing teams across oddly shaped, often destructible terrain—while adding a handful of contemporary features. It includes a short single-player campaign but emphasizes competitive play, with local and online multiplayer options. New elements like a lightweight crafting system (assemble simple devices from scavenged parts), destructible structures and static emplacements, rideable vehicles, and a mix of inventive and returning weapons broaden tactical choices without overcomplicating the familiar formula. The result is an accessible, chaotic tactical multiplayer experience that restores much of the series’ earlier charm and offers room for skill growth. Strengths include approachable depth and flexible multiplayer setups; weaknesses are occasional camera-control issues and some unpredictable or steep-to-learn devices. Overall, it’s an enjoyable revival that’s easy to pick up and likely to provide hours of fun for casual groups while still rewarding dedicated play.

Brothers in Arms: Double Time

Brothers in Arms: Double Time bundles two World War II shooters, Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood, into a single package that recreates the Battle of Normandy across 31 missions. The campaigns are narrative-driven and historically inspired, emphasizing squad-based objectives and tactical scenarios that reward planning, positioning, use of cover, and coordinated small-unit maneuvers. The compilation centers on its single-player campaigns and tactical combat rather than arcade run‑and‑gun action; multiplayer is not the primary focus. For players seeking a lighter, multiplayer-oriented turn-based alternative, Worms: Special Edition is a recommended option.

Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers

Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers is a 4X MMO set on the Siren Islands where players take on the role of Titan Chasers investigating colossal creatures, with Godzilla and Kong central to the mystery. Gameplay blends exploration, base development, resource management, and tactical encounters: scout new territory, secure supplies, expand your foothold, and coordinate units and abilities in battles to overcome rival groups and the Titans themselves. Multiplayer interaction is key, supporting both alliances for tackling larger threats and competitive play for control of strategic zones. The world emphasizes immersion with dynamic encounters and detailed Titan encounters that heighten danger and discovery. For a different tactical experience, Worms 3 offers turn-based, fast-paced, humorous multiplayer skirmishes focused on direct, arcade-style strategy rather than large-scale 4X progression.

Cannon Fodder

Cannon Fodder is an action-strategy shooter that puts you in charge of small squads across short, mission-based levels, blending fast-paced shooting with tactical decision-making. Controls emphasize real-time aiming and unit direction, rewarding quick reflexes and thoughtful positioning as you face foes ranging from individual infantry to armored vehicles; levels are designed for replayability. The game pairs dark, satirical humor with an underlying anti-war message, a juxtaposition that divided opinion even as it received strong critical praise and awards on release. For a very different take with similar recognition, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City offers open-world, story-driven gameplay, while titles like Worms or later entries in the series provide alternative tactical or humorous experiences.

Evertried

Evertried is an isometric, tactical rogue-lite set in a mysterious tower where turn-based combat emphasizes positioning, chaining distinct character abilities, and interacting with environmental hazards. Procedural floor designs and varied obstacles force you to think several moves ahead, using traps and layout to your advantage while adapting to new tactical problems each run. Successful play rewards studying enemy behavior, baiting and flanking foes, funneling or denying tiles, and conserving scarce resources while choosing upgrades that fit your style. If you enjoy similar tactical challenges, consider titles like Worms 3 (turn-based artillery with destructible environments), Into the Breach (predictive, puzzle-like battles), Darkest Dungeon (stressful tactical roguelike with party management), or Tangledeep (class-based grid combat with deep progression).

OpenLieroX

OpenLieroX is a fast-paced 2D pixel-art shooter inspired by Worms and Liero that emphasizes chaotic, tactical matches. It offers a vast catalog of user-created and modded weapons, thousands of community-made maps, editable player avatars and loadouts, and a built-in level editor for designing and sharing arenas. Simple, addictive controls combine with deep, emergent combat to keep matches fresh and approachable for newcomers while satisfying nostalgic players. As a very different but popular alternative that also supports creativity and multiplayer, consider Minecraft, a sandbox game centered on building, exploration and community-created content.

UFO Alien Invasion

UFO Alien Invasion is a free strategy game in which you command Earth's defenses against an extraterrestrial onslaught, selecting and deploying units while managing limited resources. Play emphasizes thoughtful planning and adaptation: missions present varying objectives and conditions, requiring you to research and field units, tailor formations, and balance immediate combat needs with longer-term resource allocation as threats escalate. The game suits both casual players who enjoy tactical encounters and dedicated strategists who appreciate deeper planning and resource mechanics. Alternatives to consider include Into the Breach (compact paid tactical), Battle for Wesnoth (free turn-based fantasy with many campaigns), XCOM 2 (deeper paid tactical/strategic campaign), OpenRA (free, open-source reimagining of classic RTS), and Worms W.M.D (paid humorous turn-based artillery).

Warmachine: Tactics

Warmachine: Tactics is a turn-based tactical game that pairs detailed visuals with a layered strategic system, offering a story-driven single-player campaign and competitive multiplayer. Combat emphasizes positioning, cover, and line-of-sight to make each engagement feel meaningful. Players customize squads, tweak equipment and loadouts, and manage unit roles and synergies while planning long-term strategy and allocating resources. The game suits those who enjoy deliberate, chess-like decision making and roster customization; fans of Valkyria Chronicles, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and darker tactical experiences like Wastelander will find similar rhythms.

Borderlands 2: Deluxe Vault Hunters Edition

Borderlands 2: Deluxe Vault Hunters Edition returns to Pandora five years on, pitting players against Handsome Jack in a fast-paced first-person shooter that blends dark humor with frantic combat and a bold narrative. It features four new Vault Hunters with three skill branches each, RPG-style progression to unlock perks and upgrades, and the Deluxe edition adds extra downloadable content and collectibles, two-player cooperative play, varied new environments, more consequential NPC interactions and mission outcomes, and an expanded procedural weapons system that generates a vast array of guns, shields, and equipment. As an alternative paid option, Worms: Special Edition offers tactical turn-based artillery combat with expanded mechanics, diverse weaponry and loadouts, dynamic encounters, and strong replayability — a strategic, slower-paced contrast to the looter-shooter style.
