English WeChat now available for Windows
WeChat, the messaging platform that started in China, is now offered in an English-language desktop client for Windows. This free application mirrors many of the features found on the mobile editions, giving you the ability to message contacts and exchange files from your PC.
How to register and connect your phone
You must create your WeChat account on a smartphone before using the Windows client. The sign-up procedure requires a valid mobile number and a verification code sent to that number. Granting the app permission to access your address book lets it detect which of your contacts already use WeChat.
To link the desktop app to your account, open the Windows version and follow the on-screen instructions to scan the QR code with the mobile app. Once the scan completes, the desktop client will unlock and match the look-and-feel of the mobile interface.
Core desktop functions
The Windows app supports essential messaging features:
- Real-time text conversations with your contacts and desktop notifications for new messages.
- Transfer of files between devices directly through the chat window.
- Quick insertion of emojis and the ability to capture and send screenshots from your PC — the screenshot tool intelligently snaps around the window you hover over.
Why file transfers are handy on Windows
Sending files from a PC can be more convenient than doing so on a phone, particularly for iOS users who face stricter file-handling limits. The desktop client lets you attach and send virtually any file type, making it useful for sharing documents, images, and archives without workarounds.
Current limitations to be aware of
There are a few notable restrictions compared with some other desktop messengers:
- The Windows client does not offer built-in voice or video calling, so real-time audio/video conversations require other apps.
- You cannot use the desktop app independently — a linked mobile WeChat account is mandatory.
Summary: a helpful companion app
WeChat for Windows serves as a practical companion to the mobile apps: it keeps you reachable from your PC and simplifies exchanging files and screenshots. However, if you need desktop voice or video calls or a standalone desktop-only account, you will need to use an alternative solution.
