NeoChat — Overview and Purpose
NeoChat is a flexible chat client built for the Matrix network that prioritizes private, collaborative conversations. It supports exchanging multimedia alongside plain text and is intended to implement the broad capabilities defined by the Matrix specification. As the Matrix standard evolves, NeoChat is updated to add new functionality and close existing gaps.
Core Communication Capabilities
NeoChat handles multiple message types and media formats:
- Audio clips and voice messages
- Video files and clips
- Plain text messaging and threaded conversations
These features aim to provide a full chat experience suitable for both one-on-one and group discussions.
Experimental Add-ons
The application includes a set of optional or trial features that expand how users interact:
- Location-sharing events
- Custom sticker packs
- Polls and quick surveys
These extras are still maturing but can improve engagement and coordination in chats.
Current Limitations and Development Roadmap
NeoChat does not yet implement every Matrix feature; two notable gaps are:
- Full end-to-end encryption for every use case
- Native VoIP (voice and video calling) support
The team continues to work on these areas as the Matrix specification and ecosystem progress, so future releases should address many of the outstanding items.
