Overview of SplitCam and its purpose
Normally, a single video capture device (like a webcam) can only be accessed by one application at a time. SplitCam is a free virtual video-splitting driver that creates virtual clones of one physical video source so multiple programs can receive the same live feed simultaneously.
Supported video inputs
SplitCam works with a variety of capture devices, including:
- Digital and analogue video cameras
- VGA/USB web cameras
- TV tuners, TV‑IN sources, DV devices and even VHS capture setups
Applications that can use the same camera
You can route the same camera feed into many chat and conferencing programs. Examples include:
- Skype Video
- MSN Messenger
- Camfrog
- AOL AIM
- PalTalk
- ICQ
- Yahoo Messenger
SplitCam can also be used with most other applications that accept a standard Windows video capture device.
Capacity and typical scenarios
- One physical source can be split to serve up to 64 client applications at once.
- Common uses include streaming a single home video to several friends using different messengers simultaneously (for example, one friend watching via MSN while another watches via Yahoo).
Practical considerations and limitations
- Although the functionality is useful, managing several messaging clients or video sources at the same time can quickly become confusing.
- Initial configuration can be fiddly; you may spend considerable time setting up simultaneous feeds before everything runs smoothly.
- Performance and reliability will depend on your PC hardware and the video resolutions/framerates you try to deliver.
