Overview of the Sonos controller app
Sonos Controller (also available as Sonos Desktop Controller) is a complimentary app from Sonos that centralizes control of your wireless audio gear. Available for PCs and mobile devices, it acts as a remote hub for configuring compatible speakers, loading audio files, and streaming playback to one or multiple devices across your home network.
Core features and what you can do
- Group multiple speakers so they play the same track in perfect sync throughout your rooms
- Stream live content such as radio stations and podcasts directly from the app
- Tailor the app to your listening habits with personalized music preferences and recommendations
- Schedule alarms to wake up to music or other audio sources
- Search for tracks and browse your library from within the interface
- Perform simple playback controls like play, pause, skip, and volume adjustments
Devices, compatibility, and limitations
Sonos is an American company known for multiroom wireless audio systems, from compact smart speakers to full home setups. The Controller app is required to operate Sonos hardware, but not every Sonos product works with every version of the app. Before installing, confirm that your specific speaker model is supported by the Controller version you plan to use.
Editions of the Controller: modern vs legacy
- Sonos S2: the current, feature-rich release designed for most recent Sonos speakers; it brings improved functionality but does not support a handful of older models
- Sonos S1: the legacy edition that supports older hardware; it no longer receives major feature updates but still gets bug fixes and remains available on mobile for devices that require it
If a speaker in your collection is not compatible with S2, you can continue to use S1; in many setups both apps can coexist so you can manage mixed-generation systems.
Why use the Sonos Controller
The Sonos Controller simplifies managing your audio ecosystem without having to touch each speaker. It gives you centralized playback, group control, scheduling, and personalized discovery—letting you shape your listening experience from a single app whether you’re at your desk or on the go.
