What this utility does

Link Shell Extension (64-bit) is a free add-on for Windows Explorer that provides direct, in-place management of filesystem links. Rather than copying files, it creates and maintains references such as symbolic links, hard links and junctions so the same underlying data can be referenced from multiple locations without duplication.

Integration with File Explorer

  • Installs as a native shell extension and adds commands to Explorer context menus.
  • Operates through the standard desktop file-handling interfaces, so there’s no separate standalone window to learn.
  • All actions modify directory entries on NTFS rather than the contents of files, keeping link management at the filesystem level.

Key capabilities

  • Presents link metadata (type, targets, and other details) in dedicated property dialogs.
  • Lets you create, inspect, and remove links directly from right-click menus.
  • Preserves a single data instance while allowing multiple references to that instance across the filesystem.
  • Offers batch processing so several links can be removed or created in one operation.
  • Smart Mirror: keeps a target folder structure synchronized by updating link targets to reflect changes in the source.
  • Smart Copy: copies directory trees but converts duplicated files into links that point back to the original items.
  • Link cloning (directory cloning): reproduces directory layouts while maintaining the relationships between links and their targets.
  • Overlay icons can mark linked items inside Explorer views; these indicators are resolved in real time and reflect the current link state.
  • Property panels reveal the link type, absolute target path, method of creation, and reference count (for hard links).
  • Inspection tools expose a link’s internal structure and destination so you can confirm what each reference points to.

Removal, maintenance and limitations

  • Deleting a link removes only the reference; the original data object remains intact unless the final reference is removed.
  • The extension does not run background synchronization services or scheduled tasks; all work is triggered via Explorer commands.
  • There is no built-in reporting, automated auditing, or persistent logging—administration is performed interactively through the shell interface.
  • Cross-filesystem linking, automation engines, visual dependency graphs, bundled backup/migration tools, and version-tracking features are not provided.

Suggested alternative

ZArchiver Free is a commonly recommended alternative that adds its own link-cloning functionality and presents link details in clear dialogs. It similarly operates at the filesystem level to preserve link relationships and exposes target information and link types for inspection.
