Xenu’s Link Sleuth is a free Windows utility that scans websites to locate non-working links and other linked resources. It crawls pages to identify URLs, images, backgrounds, frames, and image maps, and it can also probe resources served over FTP, Gopher and SSL. What the scan returns
After a crawl, Xenu generates a long but readable listing of every link it encountered: working links, redirects, and errors such as 404 pages. Double-clicking an entry opens the target page, and a properties view reveals additional metadata. The output can be filtered to show only problem links or every URL discovered. Link statuses are color-coded for quick scanning (for example, green for successful responses and red for errors).
Site structure, image checks, and exports
The tool can export the complete URL map of a site to a spreadsheet, including metrics like click-depth from the homepage and resource sizes. This helps you spot large images that slow page loads: sort the results by size to find media that needs compression or resizing. The exported Excel file also lists links to plug-ins, backgrounds, and other assets for a full picture of your site’s architecture.
Performance and limits
Xenu uses a multithreaded crawler (preemptive multithreading) to check several pages at once. The default thread count is 30, but you can raise it — some users increase it toward 100 — keeping in mind that extremely high concurrency can cause timeouts. The program effectively handles very large sites; users have scanned hundreds of thousands to millions of links, so it’s suitable for most small- to medium-sized websites.
