Quick summary
DiskInternals Linux Reader lets you view files on Linux-formatted partitions from within Windows. It exposes Ext2/Ext3 volumes and presents their contents in a familiar file‑browser style so you can inspect folders and files without booting into Linux.
Filesystems, devices and extra utilities
- NTFS drives
- FAT-formatted volumes
- Optical discs (CD/DVD)
- USB flash drives
- Ext3 partitions
- Ext2 partitions
The application also links to other recovery and access utilities for working with these media types.
Why it is read-only
Access from Windows is intentionally limited to read-only. Allowing Windows to write directly to a Linux filesystem when Linux itself is not running risks file damage or corruption that would surface the next time you boot Linux. To avoid that hazard, this tool prevents write operations.
Image previews and security
DiskInternals provides previews for photographs and image files, similar to what you’d expect from Windows Explorer or a dedicated photo browser, which makes browsing media straightforward. If your Linux installation uses security tools, the reader is capable of accessing files despite those protections (it operates at the partition level rather than as a full OS session).
When to choose this tool
- If you frequently switch between Windows and Linux and need quick read access
- When you want to recover or inspect deleted or misplaced files without booting Linux
- When you need to preview images stored on Linux drives from Windows
Keep in mind you cannot save changes back to the Linux partition using this program; use it primarily for viewing, copying out, and recovery tasks.
