Kopia — Encrypted backup utility
Kopia is a free, open-source backup application that makes it simple to create fast, secure copies of your files for both cloud and on-premises storage. It can take encrypted snapshots of selected files and folders, then push those snapshots to remote storage or keep them on a local server or NAS. Backups are kept in chronological order and can follow custom naming or retention patterns you configure in the application.
Supported storage backends
- Amazon S3
- Azure Blob Storage
- Backblaze
- RClone-compatible remotes
- Google Cloud Storage
- Local servers and NAS devices
Snapshots, encryption, and archive structure
Kopia generates encrypted snapshots of whatever you choose to back up, ensuring the uploaded data is protected in transit and at rest. Snapshots are organized by time, making it easy to browse and restore earlier versions. You can adjust how snapshots are named and grouped from the program’s configuration screens.
Scheduling and policy controls
- Compression level and other storage optimizations can be tuned per policy.
- File selection rules let you include or exclude files and directories based on patterns.
- Snapshot frequency can be set to run automatically on schedules ranging from hourly intervals up to once per month.
These automated policies let you enforce a consistent backup cadence and manage retention without manual intervention.
Deployment and flexibility
Kopia supports using popular cloud providers by supplying your own account credentials, or you can point it at a personal remote server for full control over storage. It handles both small and large datasets efficiently, making it suitable whether you’re protecting a few important documents or large volumes of data.
Alternatives worth evaluating
If you prefer a vendor-provided desktop sync client, Google Drive for Desktop is a widely used free option that offers seamless file syncing to Google Drive. Consider it if you want tight integration with Google Workspace and simpler, built-in syncing features rather than a dedicated encrypted snapshot workflow.
