Overview

FileZilla is a widely used, no-cost FTP client that simplifies moving files between your computer and remote servers. It supports common transfer standards and bundles a set of conveniences — like quick site access and transfer controls — inside a straightforward, if somewhat dated, interface. A native Windows build can also run as a server; Mac and other platform builds provide the client features.

Key capabilities

  • QuickConnect for instant connections to saved hosts
  • Remote-editing tools that let you modify files on the server without extra downloads
  • Bookmarking and site profiles for frequently visited locations
  • Bandwidth throttling so transfers don’t monopolize your network
  • Site manager to keep credentials and connection settings organized

Interface and usage flow

When you open the client you’ll see a dual-pane layout: one pane shows local files, the other shows the remote server. This side-by-side arrangement makes it easy to drag and drop or monitor transfers as they happen. A large transfer queue is displayed below the panes where you can check pending jobs, view progress, and see errors. If a connection drops, the queue shows which files completed and which failed — and when connectivity returns you can resume interrupted transfers from where they stopped. The main menu and toolbar provide fast access to upload/download commands and common utilities.

Fast connections

Instead of repeatedly typing host details, QuickConnect stores the parameters you enter and can automatically fill them the next time you connect. Enter the server address, port, username, and password once, click QuickConnect, and subsequent visits to that host are much faster.

Storing site credentials

The built-in site manager lets you save multiple server profiles. Store the addresses, usernames, ports, and protocol preferences for each destination so you can connect with a single click rather than re-entering details every session.

Sharing files and server mode

On Windows, FileZilla can operate as a server, allowing you to host files on your machine so others can connect and download them — a functionality similar in purpose to cloud sharing, but managed by your own server setup. Client-only builds (macOS, Linux) provide robust transfer tools but not the built-in server capability.

Controlling transfer speed

If you need to preserve bandwidth for other tasks, the client can cap upload or download speeds. Set a transfer limit and FileZilla will keep transfers below that threshold so other internet activity remains responsive while files move.

Reliable transfer management

FileZilla supports resuming interrupted uploads and downloads, offers a “Keep Alive” option to reduce timeouts during busy server conditions, and can secure sessions using SSL/TLS. The uploads/downloads panel gives you central control over queued items and their status.

Pricing and editions

There are two editions: a free client that covers FTP, SFTP, and FTP over TLS, and a paid/server-oriented distribution for users needing enterprise features or server deployments. For most individual users, the free client delivers the essentials.

Alternatives to consider

  • Cyberduck — modern UI, good cloud-storage integration
  • CuteFTP — feature-rich commercial client with advanced options
  • FlashFXP — mature client with strong Windows-specific tools

Recommendation

If you occasionally or regularly need an FTP/SFTP client, FileZilla is a practical, easy-to-use choice. It offers quick site access, a clear transfer queue, resume support for interrupted jobs, credential storage, and bandwidth controls — all of which make file transfers straightforward and efficient.
