Service availability update
Google Latitude is no longer available for download. The app and its web interface have been discontinued, so you can’t install or access it anymore.
What the service offered
Google Latitude let users share their real-time location with selected friends and family. It displayed both your position and the locations of people who granted you permission on a map, making it easier to meet up or see who’s nearby.
How it worked (basic steps)
- Open Latitude in your browser and agree to share your location to get started.
- Ask friends to grant you permission before their locations appear on your map.
- Once sharing was enabled, your location and approved contacts’ locations showed up on a map.
Privacy controls and permissions
Latitude provided granular privacy settings so you could control who saw your location and when. You could limit sharing to specific people, temporarily pause location updates, or hide your precise position while still using the service.
Device and usage notes
- The service was most useful on mobile devices (smartphones or tablets) because they typically have built-in GPS hardware.
- A device with a GPS receiver was generally required for accurate, continuous location reporting.
- Latitude complemented Google Maps by adding a social, location-sharing layer for coordinating with friends.
Alternatives to consider
- Life360 — family-focused location sharing with location history and safety features.
- Google Maps location sharing — integrated into Maps and available across Android and iOS.
- WhatsApp Live Location — temporary location sharing inside chats for easy coordination.
- Apple’s Find My — for Apple device users to share locations and locate devices.
