Current status and suggested replacement
Picasa’s online photo service is no longer available. If you’re looking for a modern alternative from Google, switch to Google Photos for ongoing photo storage and sharing.
Key capabilities that were offered
- Instant uploads from the Picasa desktop program, including a marker to show which desktop albums have already been synced
- Support for short video files (longer clips were typically recommended for YouTube)
- Options to apply tags and attach location data to photos
- Ability to select any image to serve as an album’s cover
Upload controls and quality settings
- Choose between Fast, Normal, or Highest quality when sending photos, depending on remaining space and desired fidelity
- Decide whether an album is visible to everyone or restricted to specific people
- Video uploads often required more time than still photos
Accounts, storage limits, and pricing
Signing up requires a Google account. New users received a free allocation of storage (historically about 1 GB), which many quickly exceeded. Paid upgrades were available at modest rates to expand capacity.
Viewing, editing, and sharing options
- Embed and direct links made it simple to share albums on blogs or by email
- Integration with basic online editing tools allowed light adjustments to images
- Photos could be viewed manually or presented as a slideshow
- Social sharing supported major services for cross-posting
Final thoughts
While Picasa Web provided a straightforward interface and tight integration with the desktop client, the online service has been retired. For current Google-backed photo management and sharing, Google Photos is the recommended replacement.
