Overview
DU Meter is a lightweight utility for visually monitoring and managing data flow on your computer. It provides continuous tracking of upload/download throughput without requiring costly network-management suites. The tool supports a wide range of connections — including dial-up, DSL, cable, LAN, satellite and modern broadband — and includes comprehensive logging, event-triggered actions, and alerting to help you spot or anticipate unusual network behavior.
Notable upgrades
What began as a simple bandwidth meter has been expanded into a more polished package. The interface has been redesigned with a clearer graphical presentation and a compact "mini" mode that runs quietly in the background. The application now stores statistics in a real database engine, improving the precision and detail of notifications about anomalous traffic. On Windows Vista, DU Meter also offers a sidebar gadget for quick access.
Language and localization updates
- Fixed an issue where the program title bar displayed incorrect text after switching languages.
- Corrected various typographical mistakes and other small errors in localized UI strings.
- Resolved a mismatch where the language selected in options did not reflect the actual interface language in use.
- Restored proper update of some localization files that were left outdated after upgrading from version 5.26.
Interface and display fixes
- Eliminated a rare condition that caused duplicate registration reminders to appear after reboot.
- Suppressed registration pop-ups when a full-screen application (game, video, etc.) is active.
- Fixed severe clipping of the DU Meter “beep” notification so sounds play correctly.
- Made mini-mode activation consistent: double-click now toggles mini-mode regardless of whether the taskbar band is visible.
- Network Connection Viewer is now fully compatible with IPv6 addresses.
- Process names now appear correctly in the Network Connection Viewer for all shown items.
- Restored proper behavior of the taskband on Windows Server 2008 R2 and when the Windows 7 classic theme is used.
Startup and shutdown reliability
- Addressed rare crashes that could occur during Windows shutdown.
- Corrected service start failures on some Windows XP machines with SSD drives that reported Error 111.
- Fixed an intermittent failure to launch DU Meter at Windows startup when auto-logon was enabled.
Installation and service stability
- Resolved cases where a service reinstallation during an upgrade left the DU Meter service unregistered.
- Explicitly added a dependency so the DU Meter service relies on the Base Filtering Engine (BFE) on Windows Vista and later.
- The installer now halts the installation if the system’s Base Filtering Engine is not functioning correctly.
Other corrections
- Fixed application of custom IPv4 address filters so the specified mask is honored as intended.
- Patched a token handle leak in the DU Meter service that could occur when no user was logged in but desktop notifications were scheduled.
- Prevented uncontrolled growth of the error log by replacing the old error reporting component.
- Corrected service error recording so that errors are reliably saved to the log.
Summary
DU Meter remains a practical, low-cost tool for everyday network monitoring and alerting. These updates improve language accuracy, user interface behavior, startup/install robustness, and internal error handling to provide a more reliable monitoring experience.
