400 Arba3meyeh — Arabic team trick-taking card game

400 Arba3meyeh (sometimes called "Forty-One") is a partnership trick-taking game with fixed trumps and an auction phase. Common in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, and Iraq, the aim is straightforward: the first partnership to reach 41 or more points wins the match.

Players, objective, and setup

  • Four players form two teams of two, sitting opposite each other.
  • A standard 52-card deck is used; each player receives 13 cards.
  • The hand consists of 13 tricks in total; play continues until all cards have been played.

How the auction works

  • Every player must submit a bid; passing is not allowed. The baseline minimum bid is 2.
  • Hearts are always the trump suit.
  • If the combined total of the four bids is less than 11, the cards are reshuffled and redealt.
  • As scores change, minimum bid requirements can increase: a player on 30–39 points must bid at least 3, and a player on 40–49 points must bid at least 4. In some local variations, when minimums rise the table enforces that the total of the four bids equals 13.

Trick play and follow-up

  • The player who wins a trick leads the next one.
  • On each trick, players must follow the suit that was led if they can.
  • A trick is taken by the highest trump played; if no trumps are played, the highest card of the led suit wins the trick.
  • Play proceeds until all 13 tricks have been played.

Scoring and multipliers

  • Points are awarded according to how many tricks a player (or team) wins and the size of their bid.
  • If a player fails to make the number of tricks they pledged, they incur a penalty based on their bid and the applicable multiplier.
  • Common multiplier tiers (listed high-to-low) used in many rule sets:
  • Bids of 11 or more: 4× points per trick
  • Bids of 9–10: 3× points per trick
  • Bids of 5–8: 2× points per trick
  • Bids of 2–4: 1× point per trick
  • Sweeping all 13 tricks usually carries a very large reward in many variants; conversely, failing a bid of that magnitude can result in a significant loss (for example, some rule sets assign −52 points for an unsuccessful 13-trick bid).
