Game in brief
Muushig (Муушиг) is a well-loved Mongolian trick-taking card game that’s available as an iPhone app. The mobile version reproduces the traditional rules so you can play matches with friends and opponents around the globe.
Card set and ranks
The game uses a compact 32-card pack made up of eight ranks. The cards are:
- Ace
- King
- Queen
- Jack
- 10
- 9
- 8
- 7
Initial setup and exchanges
- Each player receives five cards at the start of a hand.
- One card is turned up to indicate the trump suit, and a stock of six cards remains.
- After the first deal, players may draw from the stock to replace up to five cards in their hand.
- If the stock is exhausted, no further exchanges are allowed and players must continue with the cards they hold.
Objective and scorekeeping
The aim is to be the first player to reduce your score to zero. Every participant begins with 15 points. Scores are typically tracked by a neutral scorer or an automated counter in the app.
Trick-taking rules
- When a trick is led, you must follow suit if possible and play a card that is higher than the current card or play a trump.
- If you cannot follow with a higher card or a trump, you may play any other card.
- The highest card in the suit led, or the highest trump played, wins the trick.
- It’s expected that every player captures at least one trick during a hand.
Penalties and dropping out
- Failing to take at least one trick in a match results in a five-point penalty.
- To avoid that penalty, a player can choose to resign before a hand begins; a successful resignation adjusts the player’s score by subtracting the number of tricks they have already taken (as applied by the agreed scoring method).
