On Vista x64 plot keeps redrawing

This happens on Windows Vista x64. Not sure about other Windows versions. Whenever I plot a large data set, often the plot stops as if interrupted, pauses a split second and then starts over. This often happens 2-3 times in a row before the plot finishes and control is returned to the console window.
On large plots this can easily make a plot take anywhere from 20-30 seconds, which is a major detriment to usability.
