  • FusionEdit M v0.03

This announcement marks the beginning of a completely new direction for FusionEdit. I'm even giving it a new buzz-word-o-rific title: FusionEdit M. FusionEdit is moving out of the cozy world of desktop .NET applications and into the wild untamed world of prototype Ajax web applications. Built completely on PHP, MySQL, Javascript + XML, and some hopefully valid XHTML 1.0, FusionEdit M currently targets Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7. It's also been tested in Opera and Safari 3 Public Beta, but it's buggy and slow. On the server side, FusionEdit runs out of the box on Apache or IIS, combined with PHP 5 and MySQL 5. One of the more innovative features of FusionEdit is the flexible build system. Customizable build profiles allow you to set up debug or release builds with different compiler executables, arguments, and libraries. The entire build chain of each profile is described in a comprehensive XML file. In addition, you can choose which revisions each file should be built with. This is obviously a work in progress, though. Some glaring holes in the feature list: - File saving. Kind of a big one. The current release does not let you save files. You can commit a new revision, but who wants to do that every time you go to build? - Better versioning. Right now, each file has its own revision history; there's no correlation of revisions between separate files. Obviously both of these are soon to change. The reason file saving is not done is because it's actually one of the most complicated features to implement. The idea is to allow developers to edit files simultaneously in real-time, which never worked very well in the old .NET version. The new system will detect line-by-line changes, and if another developer is in the middle of writing a new function, the compiler will simply ignore his changes until he saves. Even after he saves his changes, you will still have full control over which lines of code go to the compiler. If I ever get around to implementing it, it'll be called "PowerLines". Catchy, isn't it? Unfortunately, no live web installation is available at this time. I don't have access to a web host that will allow me to install MCC18 and run CPU-intensive processes. If you know of one and are willing to help, please contact me. And yes, it will work with MCC18 in WINE. If possible, I'd like to try to set up a centralized server so everyone doesn't have to install their own server. The whole project is still early on in the development process. I'm shooting for a middle-of-January release date, and I might release weekly updates after that. If you are at all interested in helping, have access to a SourceForge account, and have no ties to radical terrorists, I'll add you to the project. Thanks for reading. Stay tuned! ~et1337
