A mind mapper, and at the same time an easy-to-operate hierarchical editor with strong emphasis on folding. These two are not really two different things, just two different descriptions of a single application. Often used for knowledge and content mgmt.
It has an extreme bug that adds THOUSANDS of <!--StartFragment --> to rich text nodes, causing severe file bloat and grinding the program to a halt. A few months ago, I would have heartily recommended it. But until they fix this massive bug, stay away from FreeMind!
So far freemind has been very helpful, if a little unintuitive to pick up (the GUI is a little perplexing at first, read the help file and use tab when it says "insert") and constricting (for instance, I'd like to make two or more nodes parents for a child (so branching ideas can reconverge), and I'd like to be able to have more than one base level node on the same map). I don't want to sound too negative, though (I can even see arguments for what initially seem to be restrictions), the functionality it supplies for freeeeee seems extraordinarily useful, I'm already installing it on all the systems I use!
FreeMind is a convenient and nearly self explaining application. It is fun to sort ideas or develop structures with it. Thanks for this great tool. P.S. And it even runs from USB-stick
