there's software available to do exactly what's being proposed here, it was developed by Microsoft-it will place and map arbitrary 2D photos/textures to a 3D space, you may want to check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Live_Labs_Photosynth.

please consider providing support for import of web-based imagery from data sources such as worldwind, usgs or landsat-most of the data is in the public domain, so it can be easily used with flightgear.

Please see the link at the end of the posting to a discussion
in the Atlas/Map feature request tracker concerning the suggestion
to factor out the FlightGear navdb in order to have it become a
standalone entity for FlightGear-related projects making use of
navdb data, using a networked client/server approach to providing
navdb query services to an arbitrary number of clients such as...

this definitely fits to the FGSD roadmap at http://fgsd.sourceforge.net/
However would be good to allow users to assign artbirary attributes to different image sources, so that things like season support could be more easily implemented by allowing users to add a season="winter" attribute and then have a processing task that will only work with images having this attribute.
This could also...

it's relevant: creation of photo-realistic textures is on the roadmap for FGSD.

actually no: this proposal is not merely related to obtaining textures for taxiways, or even just to obtain their contours, rather it may actually depend on data provided by taxidraw/apt.dat in the first place-similarly, it also requires user- interaction and even decision-making, so it is certainly not appropriate to suggest making it become a part of terragear, which boils down to being...

You should post something like this to the mailing list, or possibly even to a different project (i.e. TaxiDraw or even TerraGear)

Checking out the internet for aerial image data on airports, it getting clear quickly that using this data to enrich the FlightGear scenery would definitely boost overall realism tremendously for scenery in airport vicinity, not only for high-altitude views of complete airports, but also for low altitude views of individual airport-specific structures that may be covered by custom created...
