Founded in 1997, FlightGear is developed by a worldwide group of volunteers, brought together by a shared ambition to create the most realistic flight simulator possible that is free to use, modify and distribute. FlightGear is used all over the world by desktop flight simulator enthusiasts, for research in universities and for interactive exhibits in museums.
FlightGear features more than 400 aircraft, a worldwide scenery database, a multi-player environment, detailed sky modelling, a flexible and open aircraft modelling system, varied networking options, multiple display support, a powerful scripting language and an open architecture. Best of all, being open-source, the simulator is owned by the community and everyone is encouraged to contribute.

The only viable open source flight simulator. Flexible, fun to fly, fun and relatively easy to develop aircraft and sceneries for. In some areas surpasses commercial flight simulators while on others sill has some catching up to do. Great software.
One of the best flight simulators out there.
I actually like it, but my hardware doesn't support it.
Having fun with flightsims since 1986. Before and after MSDOS-MSFS bullshitness. I discovered FG in 1997, since that I feel free in the best simulation environment ever made. I can fly in freedom, I do can learn coding, change and share aircrafts and any other components with my airfriends. FlightGear is a friendly flight simulator.
I'm enjoying it, every day! I'm running FGFS 3.5 on Mac OS X 10.10.3
