apologies for guessing here but it seems more likely that the keyboard
events are recieved and no longer processed.  it also seems likely
that whatever events are masked, they would be masked when the mouse
leaves the display widget, not the actual window, as per item 6.

... but i really am guessing so apologies for not being more
substantiative.
