TightVNC rookie question

I am new to the world of VNC.  I dwnldd TightVNC, installed it on my 
main desktop and my laptop, which is wifi networked to my main PC. BTW, 
Win-XP SP2 Pro,  Zonealarm(via CA) freebie FW.  I want to go out of town 
and reach my main desktop via the internet(I have used GoToMyPC in the 
past but I don't like paying -- just a cheapskate!!).  I could not make 
sense of the instructions on how to actually establish contact between 
the 2 machines.  I was getting "could not connect" errors.  Is there a 
basic "TightVNC for dummies" out there somewhere?  Thanks
