Adding the DRI section gives me:
(VIA) Direct Rendering Disabled
in xorg.log.
Is there some VIA specific setting needed in the xorg.xonf maybe?

Yes you are right, it is only the video driver. I'm confused =)
But I'm still not able to get any sound out of my VX800 t5545/t5540 using
the snd-via driver or the intel one.

Some confusion I think...
The openchrome driver (in the heading) is a video driver.
The audio driver is probably the snd-via82xx module (although I always
include the very generic snd-intel8x0 as well).

Are you talking about:
- xorg6-via as per standard TS 2.2.2
- viaopenchrome_TS-2.x.tar.gz under drivers on sf.net (which is a
replacement for the standard one).
If the later, then I believe that this is the via supplied driver
(from http://www.viaarena.com). Not sure what version.
There is also an openchrome driver from
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/wiki/About
but as the name has via in it, I am assuming the via based one....
Anyway, to get DRI working you need to add
Section "DRI"
Group "Video"
Mode 0660
EndSection
to your packages/xorg6/lib/X11/XF86Config-Xorg.tpl file.

I'll look at my compile env tonight to see if I can relate the driver
on SF with either the via or OSS openchrome drivers.
