Hi I'm the lead artist of the project and what auria explained is mainly right the new engine is much more advanced and requires a much more powerful computer Also shadows in stk at high quality are equivalent to shadows at ultra in other games. You can play with them set to low. About comparing stk to other games I want to remind you we are a small team of volunteer and the game is free. You can't really compare this to multi million dollars development companies who can use state of the art game engine like unreal 4 optimized and created by dedicated programmer. There is currently no modern open source game engine (aka using technics like shaders and differed rendering) so we had to create our own in only 2 years by roughly two programmers.
