I fired up my old XP laptop, and ran the install jar using jdk1.6.0_20. However, for JAVA_HOME, it had been set previously to a jdk1.6.0 JVM (1.6.0 as in the first released version of Java 1.6). So, I then set JAVA_HOME to the newer release : C:\Program Files\Java\jre6 as in: set JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jre6 Note, there are no quotes around this value - it needs to be this way because we quote JAVA_HOME in squirrel-sql.bat and you will see an error otherwise. Also note that this is the command-line equivalent of setting it in the environment variables section in "My Computer" -> "Properties" -> "Advanced". I also set my CLASSPATH to an empty value as in set CLASSPATH= Then from the command line I was able to run squirrel-sql.bat and have it run correctly. I'm not sure, but this seems to be an issue with that early version of the JVM. Also, I noted under that first released version of Java 1.6, that the process would not die, but linger and eat up much of the CPU cycles on this machine (which happens to be a Pentium 4, single core, single CPU machine). I say this because you may want to reboot to remove the previously launched copies of the JVM, or open up the task manager and kill them off one at a time. Also, unless you backed up the original squirrel-sql.bat file, you will probably want to blow away your changes to it by re-installing into a new directory. We have a bug ticket to set JAVA_HOME to be the JVM that was used by the installer, so I think that will address this issue in the future. And since the Java 6 installer appears to assign CLASSPATH to have a value with an unquoted string (namely C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\ext\QTJava.zip), I will definitely be removing the reference to %CLASSPATH% from the squirrel-sql.bat launch script. I'd love nothing more than to put this issue to rest, so please let us know if this resolves the launch problem you are having.
