[Squirrel-sql-users] Horribly looking interface in Ubuntu - how to improve?

I used Squirrel SQL for a long time in Windows, but some months ago I 
switched to Linux (GTK).
Now, the look is very bad, as widgets are very big and out of 
proportion, and since I have a 1440x900 screen, this is a big issue.
There are also some minor display issues e.g. if I decrease the font 
size, the font decreases, while the height of the highlighting stays the 
same (I saw the same thing in NetBeans, so I suppose it's a java issue).

Is there any way to make it usable?
