I can cite direct experience... running smartctl -t long on the device and then smartctl -a on the device effectively i/o locked the machine. Had to hard power restart (and take out smartd from starting), fsck came up fine and now the machine is fine. After looking on the web for information about these drives, we have decided to go get a replacement drive right away and move our data off of it ASAP. micah On Wed, 15 Oct 2003, Bruce Allen wrote: > > According to my smartctl -a on my drive which reports to be a > > IC35L040AVER07-0: > > > > ==> WARNING: IBM Deskstar 60GXP drives may need upgraded SMART firmware. > > Please see http://www.geocities.com/dtla_update/index.html#rel > > > > This is good to know... however, it doesn't say on that page how I can > > tell if a firmware upgrade is needed, and why... and even worse, the > > link is dead for the most recent firmware (A46A): > > http://anders.fugmann.dhs.org/ibm/ > > > > I was able to go to the older firmware page (A45A: > > http://freemail.web.de/jump.htm?url=http://www-1.ibm.com/support/manager.wss%3Frs=0%26rt=0%26org=psg%26doc=MIGR-43972) > > > > and it brought me to the IBM firware page which said: > > This firmware update has been developed to improve hard drive > > stability and the SMART offline data collection process.
