If you're intimately familiar with C, then the source is your best documentation! Each port is in a directory off of src. Most of your time will be spent in src/your_port/gen.c. The way I started with the PIC port was by copying the 8051 port and changing everything that didn't look like a PIC. I then added a couple of other pieces of code... Sounds trivial, but it ain't! If your interested in the PIC18F, then I suggest starting with Martin's work and fix anything that's broken. I really don't know where his code currently stands. I simply checked it into CVS for him.
