[Samtools-help] bam block size

Dear all, 
As BAM files are concatenated BGZF blocks, I wonder if each block as a pre-defined size or if this is a consequence of the size of data, better said: is the number of blocks fixed and they vary in size or is the size fixed and they vary in number?
