Well IMHO one of the best ways to handle HAL is by "aptitude purge" (If ever I'll understand what HAL does beyond causing serious headache and tons of problems I'll let you know. ;) But to your problem... I use rox all the time to access my USB devices. What I do is adding something like /dev/usbstick1 /media/usb1 auto user, noauto, sync 0 0 to /etc/fstab and an appropriate rule for the USB-Stick to the udev, so it gets assigned the proper device (/dev/usbstickN in my case, use whaterver you like best). Now I have a nice /media/usb1 mountpoint, plug in my usb device and, aehm well, just click on it using the filer... RMB-> Eject handles umount. Details for this setup may be found on my Thinkpad-Page at http://theorie.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~arwagner/computer/T41p It's really easy to adopt. And other than HAL it just works and the best: it does this all the time, I've all necessary rights on my device and so on. A short comment on the rox desktop: though I note that some people really like for some reasons I don't and it would be really bad for rox if it made the same mistake as gnome and glue everythign together to a "one fits nothing" package. So for me a to tight integration of all parts to one single desktop seems not advisable, espcially not integrating to much low level stuff. If gnome wouldn't have started this in 2.x I'd still use it all the time. But I like my WindowMaker and so on... -- Kind regards, Alexander Wagner |
