color scales with irregular step sizes

Hi, We're using Qwt in our applications to render maps based on spectograms. This works fine. However, now we need to become a bit more flexible with the scales. Instead of using a relatively simply linear scales, we need to support non-linear scales. These scales have bigger step sizes at the edges, and smaller step sizes near the middle of the scale in a pre-defined pattern. That allows you to see more details around the central values of the range, while the extremes are still visible. We'd like to have each color have the same size on the axis color bar. I have no clue where to begin with this. I thought that perhaps I'd need to define my own scaleEngine for this? I'd really appreciate some guidance. Else, I'm afraid I'd have to hack a bit and show a different scale on the axis than what is actually set on the map... I'd appreciate any guidance on how to go about this in the right way.
