Bug #116066, was updated on 2000-Oct-04 16:32 Here is a current snapshot of the bug. Project: QuakeForge Category: Networking Status: Open Resolution: None Bug Group: None Priority: 5 Submitted by: nobody Assigned to : coderjoe Summary: High and/or spikey CPU utilization with recent beta2 Details: This might only be an issue with running multiple ports on a single box, but I've found that I'm getting high CPU utilization on my server with this build. It goes away when I down unused ports, but seems to return again minutes or hours later. More details and printscreens of my perfmon graphs are available at: http://www.bunsenlabs.com/quake/quakeforge/bugreport1/ Let me know if you have any questions, or if I can be of any help testing this further. I just downloaded the "Development Snapshots (updated daily)" and am trying that. Is that what you meant? This is the version that was compiled 12-30-2000 with Borland's compiler. Already I can see that a bug that I reported months ago is still evident: When I start up Clan Arena the server will not assign teams correctly the first time. You end up with the players getting a repeating message every 1 or 2 seconds that says "Usage: setingo [ (key) (value) ]", but this seems to be cleared up if everyone drops and reattaches. Not sure if the utilization thing is still evident but I'll report back tomorrow either way. As a bit of an update, the CPU spikes happen within an hour or so of starting up the ports, but only if I have 5 or more ports going on a single box. It didn't happen when I only had 3 ports open. I didn't get the chance to try it with 4 ports since I had to take it down to get all the ports going again. :( Bunsen out.... ------------------------------------------------------- Date: 2000-Nov-02 03:35 By: nobody Comment: It happens with Beta v4.1 as well. Thanks! Ray Dr. Bunsen ------------------------------------------------------- Date: 2000-Oct-28 00:42 By: drbunsen Comment: To update (since old bugs are being flushed): This is true with Beta3 as well. To give a little more info on this, you start out with CPU utilization being fine, but after a bit of time or usage it turns spikey. The only way to get it calmed down is to remove some or most of the ports. It's probably fine if you don't run multiple ports, or if you only run 2 or 3 ports. But it messes up with the 5 or 6 ports that I run, which is definately not the case with the standard QW server. Dr.Bunsen ------------------------------------------------------- Date: 2000-Oct-06 07:41 By: drbunsen Comment: DOH! One more thing that you have to know when looking at my print screens is that I'm running the distributed.net client so utilization would normally always be at 100%. To make it so that I can see how much utilization is being used by processes other than the distributed.net client I told perfmon to monitor the CPU utilization of the distributed.net client. Therefore, if it's at 100% then all CPU is dedicated to DNETC.EXE. IF it's at 90% then something other than DNETC.EXE is using 10% of the CPU. So, think of it as being an upside down CPU graph. :) The lower the graph, the more CPU is taken by processes other than DNETC.EXE. I've now included some additional information (including the above explanation), including screenshots this morning when utilization was all over the place even with zero players. It all calmed down when I took down the Matador port. So, now I've reset the PC and restarted all ports except for Matador to see if things still mess up or if it's something that can be traced to Matador.
