Fileplanet is "advanced" the way songbirds are some of the most "advanced" dinosaurs. It has it's charm but it has many compromises as well. (more steps to download, fewer browsers, less anonimity, etc.) Regardless of the pros and cons of the system itself, as a hosted site maintainer I felt deeply betrayed when the new system was dumped on us without warning - and with the ominous promise of features-yet-to-come (which turned out to include a pay-to-download-without-waiting-in-line option - perhaps not a bad idea but which is placed so that some users think it's the only option.) > I don't get why you people hate planetquake and related sites so much > for ? I can't speak for anybody but myself, but I think GameSpy suffers from severe corporate fat-head (hyperencephalus incorporatus) evidenced by the classic symptoms of feature-itis (inflammation of the scripting gland) loss of hearing in both ears, an unpleasent smell and green-yellow pus. (GameSpy may not be as big as they think they are. The Open Quartz test got many times more downloads from non-FilePlanet download sites.) I suspect that FilePlanet is more complicated than necessary because the emphasis is on profits from ad banners, pay-for-faster-download service and so on. How many KB of scripts and commercials is a person going to download just to get a map, model or skin? __ __ _ _ __ __ _/ \__/ \__/ Seth Galbraith "The Serpent Lord" \__/ \__/ \_ \__/ \__/ \_ sga...@kr... #2244199 on ICQ _/ \__/ \__/ _/ \__/ \__/ http://www.planetquake.com/gg \__/ \__/ \_ |
